The history of construction and development of the railway in Azerbaijan began in 1878 and was closely related to oil mining and processing. For many years oil was transported by expensive primitive methods which hindered development of the oil business. Due to expensiveness oil producers took the thought about construction of railway lines which became the reason for creation of railway in Baku and then all over Azerbaijan.
Today thanks to railway shipments machines, agricultural machines, automobiles, clothes, foods are supplied to Azerbaijan. Products of the chemical and fuel industries, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, machine engineering and metal processing, consumer goods industry are exported from Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan does not have its own car construction therefore CJSC Azerbaijan Railways purchases cars from Russia and other countries. One of Russian exporters is LLC Management Company RailTransHolding – a group of companies incorporating enterprises of heavy machine engineering, railway and automobile branches providing a wide range of production, transport and logistic services.
In July 2015 Eximbank of Russia opened a facility in the amount of RUB 1.8 bln to MC RailTransHolding to ensure supplies of railway cars to the Republic of Azerbaijan. Funds were assigned within the framework of the credit product of Eximbank of Russia – “Financing of current expenses of export supplies”.
Dmitry Golovanov, Chairman of the Management Board of Eximbank of Russia commented on the partnership with RailTransHolding: “The project with RailTransHolding is a good example of implementation of the governmental program for support of export”.
